In 1906 Steiner
accepted a charter from the O.T.O. (this was still several years before Crowley was to join and eventually take over the organisation),
which licensed him to work as head of a lodge called the Mysteria Mystica Aeterna. It is very unlikely that Steiner adopted the sex-magical practices of that organization. Rather, he was looking for an "apostolic succession" to give authority to his own ideas and his own form of Rosicrucianism. But Steiner's "Rosicrucianism", like his "theosophy", was a personal creation. He mingled Theosophical ideas of karma and reincarnation with contemporary European occultism, Goethe, and his own brand of Christianity.
In 1907 he was initiated into the Rosicrucians. By 1910 he was lecturing heavily on the Gospels, which gave him a popular following among the Germans he associated with.
Steiner's Life and Teachings24 November 1905:
Rudolf Steiner and Marie von Sivers each pay 45 Marks to Theodor Reuss for their membership in Memphis-Misraim.The negotiations over the modalities for the guidance of an independent working group still aren't complete.
On 27 March 1906
Steiner receives a letter from Reuss, in which he is addressed as 33* (AASR) and 95* (Misraim).
Oriflamme issue January-June 1906: Reuss publishes that
Steiner is a 33* and 95* of Berlin and Deputy Grandmaster of "Mystica aeterna" with jurisdiction over the members he's able to gather. Marie von Sivers becomes General Grand Secretary for the Lodges of Adoption (MM).
Steiner also uses the expressions "Mystica Eterna" (M.E.) and "Misraim-Dienst" (M.D.). According to their context, these abbreviations refer to the organisation or the content.
Both, Steiner and Reuss make use of the freemasonic terms "Royal Arch" and "Knight of the Eagle and the Pelican" (CE 265, 217). The nine (ten) O.T.O.-degres are not at all the model of the theoretical nine degrees of "Mystica aeterna". "Mystica aeterna" is not an actual organisation similar to an Order or a lodge (although Steiner uses this term in his lesson on 28 October 1911): there are no affiliated foundings, no diplomas, no warrants and the rituals are celebrated in the presence of Rudolf Steiner only, and for and by members of the Theosophical Society, only.In Steiner's vision, no "Master" supervises outer "Orders", but only the "Esoteric School" is supervised.
The "Mystica aeterna" now is considered as second department in Steiner's Esoteric School (also called "Erkenntniskultische Abteilung" = ceremonial realization/gnosis department). The Theosophical department refers more to the idealistic and studying aspect; the masonic rituals more to the practical aspect of the Esoteric Working Group.
21 June 1906 is the date which can be read on the alleged first German O.T.O.-Constitution. Again, every application for O.T.O.-membership must be in writing.
24 June 1906:
Since it appears that Steiner's "Mystica aeterna" soon will have more members than Reuss' Order, Reuss separates Memphis from Misraim and also from the 33*; he signs this with the expression "Oriental Templar Freemasons" and uses the templar calendar: "A.O.788".
15 August 1906: In a letter to A.W. Sellin,
Rudolf Steiner distances himself from Reuss' activities (if he took note of them at all). For Steiner the person "Reuss" does not play any role, but his transmission of the Misraim rite, i.e. a formal-historical-legally documented tying, in order to create an independent symbolic-ritual reestablishment does. In Reuss' letters to Steiner, Reuss does not give a single acknowledgement of a discussion or writing of Steiner. Steiner makes it "the condition that the Order [that is Reuss' AASR and MM] does NOT communicate ANY of its rituals to me."
"I constituted what has to be constituted, without Mr. Reuss ever being present ... I however IGNORED essentially the Order [Reuss' AASR and MM] completely." Admission to Steiner's Misraim-Dienst is refused to members of Reuss' Order.
On 22 September 1906, Reuss complains to von Sivers that he has not yet received an answer to his letter from one month ago. 1 October 1906, 9 February 1907 and 12 March 1907: Reuss asks for a meeting with Steiner, in vain.
In his letter dated 9 February 1907: Reuss confirms that there is no mutual communication between him and Steiner in writing and that he is accepting this.
Pentecoste 1907:
The first department of the Esoteric School of Steiner separates from the Esoteric School of Theosophy as Steiner pursues another teaching system. He complains on one hand about Annie Besant's Americanism, i.e. worldliness and on the other hand on her adjustment on Indian traditions which would not have any effect in the West. For Steiner, the breathing is not to be controlled by physical body-exercises, but the bodily effects are to be consequences of the Intuition exercises. Steiner's path does the opposite of what the ancient Yogi did when he blended the thinking and breathing processes.
15 June 1907:
Reuss sends Steiner an Edict making Steiner a 33*, 90* and 96* of Berlin and independently acting General Grandmaster of the Sovereign General Grandcouncil of the Mizraim-Rite of Germany. The stationary bears the expressions "Memphis and Mizraim Rite of Masonry. Order of Oriental Templars and Esoteric Rosicrucians".
Rudolf Steiner: Never a member of any Ordo Templi OrientisOver the years my respect for Steiner and his works, especially his western form of Theosophy called “Anthroposophy”, has grown considerably, especially when I first read that the French Rosicrucian and Alchemical society called Freres aines de la Rose-Croix, or F.A.R+C., listed Steiner as one of their former Grand Masters, right after MacGregor Mathers and William Wynn Westcott!
Later, in june 1910, Dr. Felkin received the address to Rudolf Steiner from Dr. Wilhelm Hübbe-Schleiden. Obviously,
Steiner had already gained an impressive reputation amongst German contemporary occultists. He was the Secretary General of the German branch of the Theosophical Society under Annie Besant, but more significantly he was heading a western style lodge of the aforementioned Memphis & Misraïm (which I henceforth will abbreviate as M&M). In 1906 he was granted a charter from Theodor Reuss, the Grand Master of the O.T.O. and M&M in Germany and Austria, to run a Chapter and Grand Council called “Mystica Aeterna”. They also admitted both male and female members. In time, Mystica Aeterna became the “Cognitive Cultic Section” (also called the “Misraim Service”) of the Esoteric School of the German Section of the Theosophical Society.
Dr. Felkin met Steiner in 1910 and obviously was greatly impressed by him, being seen as the hitherto missing link to the historical German Rosicrucian fraternity and therefore corroborating with Felkin’s conceptions of what the Secret Chiefs of the Third Order was supposed to be. Supposedly Dr. Felkin was persuaded also by his discarnate and astral teacher Ara Ben Shemesh (abbreviated as A.B.S.), the “Arab Teacher”. However, it seems that Steiner had a representative in London, as Waite recounts the following in his notebook:
October 14th 1910 (cont.): News from 3rd order is: Old retired London clergyman belongs to conclave in question FR has his name and address. Another name and address were given him, but he is to wait until approached by this person. FR was believed by 3rd Order to be involved with A[leister] C[rowley]. Other info. from Third Order hindered by presence of QL.
Here we also have a reference to Aleister Crowley who was a member of Theodor Reuss’ O.T.O. by 1910 and two years later was granted a charter to open a British branch of the O.T.O. called Mysteria Mystica Maxima. The “Third Order”, i.e. the O.T.O., obviously knew of Crowley’s earlier dealings with the G.D. Today it feels quite surreal to know that the O.T.O. was regarded as a “Third Order” in one of the important branches of the Golden Dawn!
December 12, 1910: One Prink, a theosophist of Amsterdam, claims to know SR [Sacramentum Regis; Arthur Edward Waite], publisher of T[eosophical] Soc. there is Ginzel. T.Soc. people & 3rd order object to SR revising rituals, because they feel nothing Rosicrucian should be printed (nor had been on their part). GD rituals thus not Ros[icrucian]. SR pointed out that English GD was no concern of theirs; they agreed so but said they did authorise GD. One original pre−l885 member was East end clergyman mentioned in Life of Anna K[ingsford] (later edition only) − members included HPB [Helena Petrovna Blavatsky], SA, Papus [Gérard Encausse], Anna Kingsford & Maitland. [...] GD had no German connection. 3rd order works Outer Temple in Germany on GD & Sephirotic lines. Thus SDA neither did nor could license a temple.
It is clear from reading these lines by Waite, that he was highly skeptical about Felkin’s new acquaintance.
It seems that Steiner's Theosophic Rosicrucians, i.e. the Misraim Service, held the view that rituals shouldn't be printed in written format and memorized instead (this notion will occur again through Waite's notes). Strangely enough, there is a reference to Steiner’s M&M Rite working according to the Sephirothic initiatory system, an notion that Felkin later will reject as will be seen.
December 23, 1910: FR says
there are several German external temples; the Second order begins with a ritual corresponding to 5=6, it has six steps or degrees. In 3rd Order is nothing beyond 8=3 (SR says this is Daath) [...] FRs American trip on account of EOL's claim about Graal. He has entered something and got further than EOL [Ex Oriente Lux; Nevill Meakin] − more later. [...] No 3rd Order in America but in Germany at Nuremberg and somewhere near the source of Danube.
The reference of six degrees of the Steinerian M&M, or Memphis Service, is clearly a error; it in actuality had nine degrees (as did the O.T.O.). Perhaps Steiner reserved his highest three degrees for his own German people, having Felkin outside the loop? We know that Felkin only claimed to have received the VI° or 8°=3° from Steiner.
Odosmo u totalni off topic.
